Waterfalls in Black and White

Three versions of the Beacons waterfall picture treated using Silver FX Pro 2.

Version 1 was made using some random settings, with a bit of a silvery look.

  1. Version 2 is the Antique Plate preset.
  2. Version 3 has the same settings as Version 1, but with transparency for the layer set to 79%. This allows some of the colour from the original images to leak through, giving the picture a bit of a wintery feel.

Exercise: Contrasts

This is taken from The Photographer’s Eye by Michael Freeman.

Bauhaus

The Basic Course at the Bauhaus was taught by Johannes Itten. One of the first exercises that Itten set the students was to go out and identify contrasts.

Contrasts:

Two part exercise:

  1. Pair of photographs illustrating contrast.
  2. Contrast within a single image.

Examples of contrasts:

  1. Light and dark (chiaroscuro).
  2. One (or few) and many.
  3. Large and small.
  4. Long and short.
  5. Smooth and rough.
  6. Transparent and opaque.
  7. Empty and full.
  8. Loud and quiet.
  9. Colour and monochrome.
  10. Natural and man-made.
  11. Order and disorder.
  12. Old and new/young.
  13. Solid and liquid.
  14. Delicate and brash.
  15. Soft and hard.

Telephoto zoom test

Here are some clock photos at different focal lengths:

Here’s a first Bird Photo at 300mm:

Couple of things to remember:

  1. Shutter speed – keep it high! Camera shake at 300mm is very obvious.
  2. Continuous focus mode is better for birds and other moving or about to move subjects.

Long Exposure Test

Here’s a first landscape photo with a long exposure:

1/2 of a second at f22. Used the polarizing filter to get the slowest possible shutter speed.

Here’s some extra slow shutter fun:

Making the second-hand disappear

Creating ghost images

A few notes:

  1. Used the polarizing filter again to slow things down.
  2. Mantlepiece – 1 minute (ish) exposures, moving things after about 20″.
  3. Shutter delay to reduce vibration
  4. Timer mode using the remote control.
  5. Tricky to time in timer mode – most of the pictures are overexposed.

Testing Flickr Stuff

Testing the Flickr plug-in. Seems to be working – at least with two photos.
